Westford Academy Grey Ghost Football 2008

Football at WA

The town of Westford shows great promise for fielding competitive and enthusiastic teams form American Youth Football (AYF) to the High School level.

American Youth Football (AYF), under the direction of 5th year president Tim Whitcomb attracts over 200 young men and 175 young ladies aged 7 thru 14. Teamwork, cooperation and being a team player are goals of the program.

Freshman football, under the direction of long time coach John Morris and coach Sean O' Leary, has a roster of many 9th graders. The freshman program provides young men with a constructive and positive outlet for after-school energies. In addition to learning the fundamentals of the game, the student athlete academic program is monitored by coaches on a regular basis. This structure assists the student in meeting the demands of being a high school athlete.

For the high school student/athlete, the Dual County League presents a weekly challenge. Wayland, Lincoln-Sudbury, Bedford, Newton South, Concord-Carlisle, Boston Latin and Acton-Boxboro all have a rich football tradition and non-league opponents such as Lowell, Arlington Catholic, Tyngsboro and Lexington round out a challenging and demanding schedule. Many games as well as Thanksgiving Day add to the excitement of high school football.

Football at all levels can have a positive and lasting impact on a school, it’s athletic program and the entire community. The life lessons learned, not only during the game, but also at practice, regarding togetherness, striving for goals, the correlation between hard work and results and facing adversity, help instill values that are much needed in today’s society.

Mike Parent
